What to Bring When Getting NBI Clearance: Complete Guide

When you are applying to NBI, what you bring really matters. It doesn’t only mean your documents, but also what you wear and how you behave.
A single missing or irregular document can cause delays or even require you to reschedule. I went through a lot because of a missing document, and I don’t want you to go through the same. That’s why it’s important to know exactly what to bring when getting NBI clearance.
In this article, I’ll explain the documents you need for NBI clearance and the proper attire to wear.
What to Bring When Getting NBI Clearance
When applying for an NBI clearance, applicants must present identification documents that serve as proof of identity. The NBI accepts only original, government-issued IDs that are valid on the date of application and not expired.

Bring at least one (1) valid ID, but it’s highly recommended to carry at least two in case one is rejected or questioned.
Primary IDs
- Passport
- UMID / Government-issued ID
- Driver’s License
- SSS ID
- GSIS ID
- Postal ID
Secondary IDs (if primary ID is unavailable)
- PhilHealth ID
- TIN ID
- Voter’s ID / COMELEC Voter’s Certificate
- PRC ID (Professional Regulation Commission)
- Senior Citizen ID
- OFW ID
- Seaman’s Book

Note: Company IDs, Barangay IDs without a photo, and IDs issued by private companies may not always be accepted.
Additional Documents for First-Time Applicants
For first-time applicants, besides valid identification documents, these may be needed:
- Birth Certificate (either PSA-issued or Local Civil Registrar copy) – in case of name or birth discrepancies.
- Marriage Certificate (for married women) – if a married surname will be used.
- Supporting Affidavits – for applicants with discrepancies in spelling of names, birthdate, or other details.
Application Form
Visit the official NBI website and complete the required form.
Reference Number
A valid reference number is required to proceed with your NBI Clearance application.
Payment
You can pay through cards, mobile wallets, or even at the counter.
Recent Passport-size Photo
Bring a recent, colored passport-sized photo, as staff may request it.
After completing your online application, you must visit an NBI office or designated center for:
- Biometric data collection (fingerprints)
- Photo capture (taken on-site)
Appointment Confirmation
Once you register online, you’ll receive an official NBI appointment confirmation. You must present this on the day of your appointment.
Requirements for NBI Clearance
First-time Applicants
Only a valid ID and the application form are generally required.
Renewal Applicants
Bring your previous NBI Clearance, if available.
Foreign Nationals
- Valid passport
- Proof of Philippine residency (utility bill or similar document)
NBI Clearance Renewal
Renewing an NBI clearance is usually faster and requires fewer documents. Here’s what you should bring:
- Your old/expired NBI Clearance (if available)
- One valid government-issued ID
- Reference number from your online appointment
Since the NBI shifted to an online system, you cannot walk in without an appointment. After scheduling through the NBI Clearance Online Services website, you need to:
- Bring either a printed or digital copy of your NBI Online Appointment Slip
- Make sure the slip displays your reference number, schedule, and branch
- Pay the fees for clearance (around PHP130 + PHP25 for e-payment)
Without a valid appointment, you will not be entertained.
Applicants with a ‘Hit’ Status
Sometimes your application may be flagged with a “HIT” if your name matches someone with a criminal record or case. In such cases, you may be asked to return after 8–10 working days. To resolve this, you should prepare:
- Additional valid IDs for identity verification
- Supporting documents that clarify your identity, especially if your name is common
Special Cases and Additional Requirements
For Married Women
- Marriage Certificate from PSA (if using married name)
For Minors (below 18 years old)
- Original copy of Birth Certificate
- Parent or Guardian’s valid ID
- Signed consent from the parent/guardian
For Foreign Nationals
- Alien Certificate of Registration (ACR I-Card)
- Passport with valid visa
For Applicants With Legal Name Change
- Court Order or supporting legal documents
- Birth Certificate with annotation (if applicable)
Proper Attire When Getting NBI Clearance
You must follow a dress code. You may be denied entry if you are inappropriately dressed.
- Dress casually but within limits
- Wear neat, presentable clothing
- Avoid sandals, slippers, or anything inappropriate

With the right documents prepared, your NBI clearance application will be processed more smoothly and quickly. Keep at least two government IDs, the online appointment confirmation, and all supporting documents applicable to you. This preparation can save you from unnecessary delays and headaches.
